Happy Birthday, Sadie!!!
The past two weeks have been filled with activity, chaos and bedlam, so I had a memory card full of pictures and films to process today...
After spending most of last week in Morgantown, WV at the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association's (MAC-MLA) conference, I raced home to help Redmond prepare the house for Sadie's third birthday party. Robert, Marsha and the twins came to visit, Dad stayed at Mom's apartment, and we had a pretty decent turnout at the party. We rented a bounce house, so of course it rained on Saturday. The kids didn't seem to care if the floors of the bounce house were slick- nor did my Dad!
Sadie had a great time at her party... She's been talking about it for the past month, and seems to think that every day is her birthday.
These days, Sadie is completely obsessed with Halloween. She talks nonstop about witches, ghosts and jack-o-lanterns. She has memorized several of her Halloween books and walks around reciting them. She has learned the Halloween song from "Yo Gabba Gabba" and "I Don't Like Candy Corn" and sings them all the time. I'm not really sure what she's going to do after October 31st- somehow, Thanksgiving just isn't that much fun for kids, though we're spending the long weekend in Charleston and will be doing plenty of "kid things" there.
Here are some film clips and pictures....
Sadie acting coy during the "Happy Birthday" song...
Lucas letting us know how the Cookie Monster sounds when he eats cookies...
A couple of weeks ago, Sadie and I visited Redmond at his booth at the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Schools Walk for Education Fair. There were all kinds of edible treats, face painting, crafts, and jumpy slidy inflatables... At the fair each year, the "Worst Party Songs of All Time" station is played at full blast. I heard such songs as the Electric Slide, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Barbie Girl". Here, Sadie demonstrates her dancing skills to the tune of "Cotton Eyed Joe".
Sadie dances, part 2
At the birthday party, the kiddies weren't the only folks enjoying the bounce house... Watch my 71 year old father in the next two clips!
Sadie and Lucas play with a pirate ship... Sadie's pirate ship play has become a bit more intricate since she moved into the three year old classroom populated with mostly boys. Now, she's making people walk the plank and announcing, gravelly-pirate voiced, that "I have you where I want you!!!"
Lucas, clutching a ladybug ball...
This is Malcolm- Sadie's favorite friend at school. She always puts his hat on his head for him when the class goes out to play, and she talks about him all the time. We've gotten together with Malcolm outside of school for a playdate a couple of times, and they seem to really enjoy each other. Someday, she'll scribble his name in her notebook...
Sweet Lily and Marsha...
Finley, Griffin, Dana and Amelia... Griffin is in the "NO PAPARAZZI!" stage of toddlerhood...
Gathered around the food in the outbuilding. The young guy to the left of Robert and Lucas is Bradley, Sadie's second cousin.
There's Dad, post bounce house shenanigans!
Redmond's cousin Melissa arrived in witch costume with her daughter Bridget as Minnie Mouse. We hadn't seen Bridget or Bradley in a couple of years and were amazed at how grown up they were.
Sadie prepares to tackle her spooky orange cupcake.
My friend Anne with her kids Elizabeth and Max.
Here's the family graveyard... This was the beginning of our haunted trail... It's amazing what can be done with styrofoam these days...
The bounce house...
Sadie, taking a rare moment of reflection... She was dressed as a witch for her party, but the hat didn't stay on very long...
Molly, who informed me that she was "a fairy princess, not just a princess!".
Here is the view of a lake not far from Morgantown, WV. We had a picnic here on the way to Morgantown.
Here's the New River Gorge in WV.
Sadie in Homestead Park.
On the way to Homestead Park, Sadie picked this morning glory for Malcolm, in case he happened to be there. He lives right next to the park, and we've met him at the park before. It broke my heart when she walked around with her little flower asking for Malcolm and when she realized that he wasn't there.
Here's Sadie at the Walk for Education. She had a jack-o-lantern painted on her face.
Getting ready to slide...
